Spring was in the air, and a gentle scent drifted everywhere. Dewdrops glittered on the green grass, and birds sang happily in the tree branches. In a small, leafy corner lived a mischievous rabbit named Rinku with his mother and three siblings. Rinku’s best friend was Jemu, who always joined him in his adventures.
“Rinku… I’m going to the market. Stay home until I come back and look after everyone. And if you go out, don’t wander into Uncle Talib’s fields—they’re very dangerous,” his mother warned. Rinku nodded quickly, pretending to agree. As soon as they left the house, Rinku winked at Jemu and smiled, as if he were about to do something new. A moment later he nudged Jemu with his elbow.
“Listen… what are we doing sitting at home? Let’s go to Uncle Talib’s fields. There are lots of tasty carrots and cabbage there.”
“But Mom said not to go. What if we get caught?” Jemu hesitated. Rinku laughed. “Come on, you scared rabbit! Life needs a little fun. Sometimes we have to take risks. Come, I’ll teach you bravery,” he said mischievously, and slipped out while his brothers and sisters played.
The two friends headed toward the fields. As they neared Uncle Talib’s land, a few clever little birds perched on a tree spotted them and began to tease. One bird chirped, “Wow! Look at the little brave rabbit who disobeys his mother to become a hero.”
“The only thing waiting is getting caught. Then we’ll see where Uncle Talib’s shoe lands,” another bird laughed.
“I’ll go, eat carrots, and come back happy,” Rinku declared, and they moved on.
Soon they were inside the field. Fresh vegetables swayed everywhere. Rinku pulled out a thick carrot and began munching.
“Wow! This tastes amazing! Jemu, you should try it too,” he invited. Jemu, still unsure, grabbed a carrot and started eating.
Their joy didn’t last long. A booming voice thundered.
“Hey! Who’s trespassing in my field?” It was Uncle Talib, wearing a dhoti, a turban on his head, and a big stick in his hand, rushing toward them. Hearing the voice, the ground seemed to disappear beneath Rinku and Jemu’s feet. Jemu bolted, and Rinku hurried after him, but Rinku’s jacket got caught in the protective fence that surrounded the field.
“No! I’m stuck!” Rinku cried, panicking.
“Stay calm… if you get caught by Uncle Talib, you’ll lose more than your jacket,” Jemu shouted while running. Rinku pulled with all his strength to free himself, and his jacket tore. He left the torn jacket behind and kept moving.
In no time Uncle Talib was close. His eyes were red with anger, and his face was swollen.
“Now you’re caught, little thief…! I’ll settle the rest of the score,” Uncle Talib roared, leapt, and pinned Rinku down. Jemu had already slipped away.
“Hold still… I’ll deal with you now,” Uncle Talib snarled, grabbing Rinku by the ear and pulling his face close. A shiver of fear ran through Rinku’s body. He knew his luck had run out, but he still wanted one last chance.
Rinku dangled in the air, his ears tangled, his feet free. He kicked hard with his back leg at Uncle Talib. The older man wasn’t ready for the sudden strike. He staggered, his grip loosening just enough. Seizing the moment, Rinku thrust himself downward, broke free from Uncle Talib’s hands, and fell to the ground, disappearing from the man’s sight.
“Hahaha…! Does disobedience feel good now?” a crow cackled as Rinku ran.
“Look…! The jacket’s gone and so is his pride. He’ll be begging for Mom’s shoes soon!” another crow shouted.
“They’ll find him when he gets home,” the first crow added, laughing loudly.
“Silence… don’t pretend to be so clever!” Rinku snapped, his tongue out. Jemu was already out of sight.
When he reached home, his mother had already returned. The moment she saw Rinku without his jacket, her eyes hardened.
“Where have you been?” she asked.
“Um… I was just playing in the garden,” Rinku mumbled, avoiding her gaze.
“Rinku went into Uncle Talib’s field and got caught!” Jemu blurted out, as if he were free of the whole mess. His mother glared at Rinku in anger.
“I told you not to go… yet you did…? There’s no fun left for you. You’ll only find dead leaves to eat and a bed to lie in. That’s your punishment… so you learn the lesson of disobedience!” his mother declared. Rinku lowered his head, disappointed. His brothers and sisters were happily sipping carrot soup. The crows perched on a tree, laughing loudly. Jemu darted away, disappearing around the corner. As Rinku headed toward his bed, he took a deep breath and thought,
“I won’t be disobedient next time!”
