The Color‑Returning Girl

Near the hills there was a village where the colors began to fade slowly. First the blue of the sky grew dull. Then the green of the fields grew weak.
Zara noticed that the village children were picking up flowers, bird feathers, and bright stones and putting them in boxes under their beds. They loved beautiful things so much that they started keeping more than they needed.
Zara opened her own box. Inside were three shining flower petals, a red bead, and a yellow leaf. The leaf had already turned brown. She went back to the meadow and placed the leaf where she had found it. She dropped the red bead back into the river where it had been shining. Then she put the flower petals near the plant that was just trying to bloom. Nothing magical happened at once, but the next morning, when Zara looked at the field, it seemed fresher than before.
The other children watched. One by one they brought their boxes back. Some felt shy, some felt curious. All of them began returning the things they had taken. The village did not become as beautiful as it once was, but the colors faded more slowly now.
